April is dedicated to the Environment around the world as it is for Rotary. ‘Protecting the Environment’ is the newest of Rotary’s seven areas of focus. Over the years, the Rotary Club of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff has had several members for whom the Environment remains a passion. Having a healthy environment helps with disease prevention, better literacy and education, and leads to more peaceful societies.
In January, two of our members traveled to Sri Lanka as part of a Rotary Friendship Exchange (RFE). Facilitated by our fellow Sri Lankan Rotarians, we planted mango trees at a school. The trees will provide much needed shade and, eventually, food for the kids.
In October, we volunteered for Lake Bluff Open Lands Association (LBOLA). The team helped remove buckthorn, an invasive species in our area.
Quite a few years ago, new trees around Lake Forest received bags to retain water and get a better chance at establishing strong roots. The Rotary Club of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff also donated funds for new trees.
Your Local Rotary Club contributes to The Rotary Foundation (TRF) which gave $4.5 Million in Environmental global grants last fiscal year. Rotary emphasizes a community-led model. Rotary seeks to have projects where local Rotary Clubs lead which promotes sustainability.
To give to causes such as the Environment, consider giving to The Rotary Foundation (TRF) at rotary.org/en/about-rotary/rotary-foundation. Please let them know that Club #3128 (The Rotary Club of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff) inspired you.
