Mind, Body, and Health: A Neuroscience Perspective

Robin Nusslock is an Associate Professor of Psychology, Neurobiology, and Psychiatry at Northwestern University where he directs the Affective & Clinical Neuroscience Laboratory. His research investigates how the brain creates emotion and how the brain and body generate risk for both mental and physical illness. Dr. Nusslock has published over fifty peer reviewed articles in top scientific journals, is funded by the National Institutes of Health, and is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Rising Star Award from the Association for Psychological Science. His research has been featured in multiple media outlets, including the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.

Dr. Nusslock's Research highlights communication between the brain and immune system that can affect risk for both mental and physical health problems. Nerve fibers from the brain enter organs where immune cells mature and under stress can heighten risk for chronic inflammation. This inflammation, in turn, enters the brain and generates states of lethargy and mental fatigue. This presentation will present an overview of this research, and provide simple, yet scientifically informed, lifestyle suggestions for maximizing the health of both body and mind.
