![]() Sustainable Landscapes
May 31, 2023
While my landscape design has been strongly influenced by the traditional architecture prevalent on the North Shore of Chicago, and of which any good landscape architecture is meant to compliment-I have always been especially passionate about the natural world. Promoting a healthy environment and richer outdoor experience by including plants that attract wildlife such as song birds, butterflies, and pollinating insects, etc, back into the landscape has always been part of the “program”. Recognizing that we are presently experiencing the most critical decline in native wildlife populations ever recorded, primarily due to habitat loss-and my potential for championing positive change-has prompted me to leave my family business and found my new company: LandServe, LLC...“Landscapes for life!”. Through ‘LandServe’ I have the opportunity to promote a unique “hybrid” design approach for “true”, long-term sustainability: landscapes with “widely accepted visual appeal” utilizing native plants and other locally resourced materials. By creating landscapes which meet the client’s needs for function and aesthetics, I’m able to make my case for including native plant species in literally all landscapes and land developments, of any scale or style! As such, both the needs of my clients and creature are served! I brought my own special skill sets to bear in helping create the largest privately-held residential landscape company in the country. I understand the enduring legacies that will stand the test of time are not only the many landscape designs that I’ve created in the past, but more importantly, the healthier, environmentally responsible landscapes I am providing now as I lead my new company - 'LandServe, LLC...Landscapes for life!'- into the future. ![]() Policing in Lake Bluff
Aug 23, 2023
From the Lake Forester, May 31, 2022 The village of Lake Bluff is staying within the department for its new police chief as Deputy Chief Matthew Smizinski has been promoted to the top spot. At their May 23 meeting, village board trustees unanimously approved the appointment of Smizinski, a nearly 20-year veteran of the force, as Lake Bluff’s 11th police chief, effective June 1. He succeeds the retiring Mike Hosking. “He has demonstrated over his almost 20 years of his service to the village and in a recent assessment, the knowledge, skills and experience to lead the Lake Bluff police department through our next challenges and opportunities,” village President Regis Charlot said of Smizinski. Smizinski, has a master’s degree in forensic psychology in addition to two bachelors degrees. In an interview, he traced his interest in law enforcement to an internship where he worked with retired officers and they encouraged him to go into the field. He then was hired by Lake Bluff in 2002. “I started in it, and felt like it was a great thing to do,” he said. “It has been a great pleasure and privilege to be able to help people and serve a wonderful community.” Smizinski rose through the department ranks through the years, eventually becoming deputy chief in 2017. He did apply to become police chief three years ago, when David Belmonte retired. However, village officials at the time appointed Hosking — who had retired as deputy chief — as interim chief. But Smizinski’s eventual promotion to the top role was envisioned, according to Village Administrator Drew Irvin. “The village laid out a plan to further the development of the next generation of leadership within the department; organizationally, we were very close then to being ready and this plan always contemplated Matt as the next department manager,” Irvin wrote in an email, adding the position was not advertised this time around. Smizinski stated he was excited for the department and the village as his appointment was approved, and he was sworn into his new role. “It was a great experience, and a great feeling,” he said. ![]() North Chicago Schools: Progress and Challenges
Sep 06, 2023
Dr. John Price is a career educator who began teaching on the near west side of Chicago in a Catholic elementary school. John started as a volunteer teacher and the school used his salary to provide tuition scholarships for children to attend the school. Seeing his work as a service to the community has continued throughout his 25 years in education. John often says that the best job in education is the principalship. He served as the principal of Audubon Elementary School, a Chicago Public School for 5 years. Before leaving Audubon in 2011, the school earned the distinguished Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence from the US Department of Education in recognition for outstanding improvement of student learning. After leaving Audubon, John moved into district leadership for Chicago Public Schools. He served as a regional superintendent, supervising elementary and high schools for three years before leaving to become the Assistant Superintendent in Evanston, also for three years. John has been the superintendent of the North Chicago Schools since July of 2017. In the last four years John has focused on stabilizing the district’s leadership, and implementing aggressive instructional improvement initiatives focusing on our youngest learners. In addition, over the past four years the district has seen improvements in teacher retention, high school graduation, and the district has run a budget surplus each year. Working with a group of dedicated volunteers, John has helped to found the North Chicago Public Education Foundation, a not-for-profit organization whose goal is to send every graduate of NCCHS to college without cost. A California native, John has lived in Chicago since 2001 with his wife, Cheryl, and two children, ages 18 and 15. Department Accomplishments: Host: John Johnson (JJ) |

![]() Operation Greylord
Oct 11, 2023
Terrence Hake is 1977 graduate of Loyola University of Chicago School of Law. He served for five years as prosecutor in the Cook County State's Attorney's Office in Chicago and later as an FBI Agent in Chicago. In April of 1980, he agreed to assist the FBI and the United States Attorney's Office in an investigation of the Cook County Court system. For almost 4 years he worked undercover posing as a corrupt prosecutor by accepting bribes from attorneys and later as an attorney in private practice making payoffs to judges and court personnel for the dismissal of cases. The investigation, known as “Greylord", resulted in bribery and tax charges being filed against 103 judges, lawyers and other court personnel and is one of the FBI's most successful undercover investigations. When the last Greylord trial concluded in 1997, Mr. Hake had testified at the trials of 23 defendants. After serving in federal law enforcement for 23 years, he retired from the United States Department of Justice Office of Inspector General and eventually returned to the practice of law as an Assistant State’s Attorney in Cook County. Mr. Hake retired in 2016. Mr. Hake has lectured extensively to attorneys, law enforcement officers, business professionals, and college and law students concerning the ethical lessons learned and investigative techniques used in Greylord. He has spoken at many colleges and law schools including the University of Chicago, Virginia Northwestern University, Harvard, Boston College, Yale, the University of Arizona, Georgetown University and Stockholm University. In 1980 Terrence Hake was a young prosecutor in Chicago, when he complained about the judge taking bribes to fix cases in the murder, rape, and child molestation preliminary hearing courtroom. His complaint found its way to the FBI's Chicago Field Office, and he was asked by the FBI to participate in Operation Greylord, an undercover investigation of the Cook County Courts. For three years and seven months, Mr. Hake posed, first as a corrupt prosecutor by accepting bribes from criminal defense attorneys, and later, as a corrupt defense attorney paying bribes for the dismissal of cases. In his role as a corrupt criminal defense attorney, Hake represented dozens of undercover FBI Special Agents from throughout the country, who came to Chicago to pose as criminal defendants in FBI-created criminal cases. Greylord was the first FBI investigation to bug a judge's chambers and another first was Hake becoming an FBI Special Agent in 1983, while working undercover. Operation Greylord is one of the FBI's most successful undercover investigations. Hake received the 1989 Louis E. Peters Award from the FBI and Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI for his undercover work as a prosecutor. Host: Peter Elmer |
