Terrence Hake is 1977 graduate of Loyola University of Chicago School of Law. He served for five years as prosecutor in the Cook County State's Attorney's Office in Chicago and later as an FBI Agent in Chicago. In April of 1980, he agreed to assist the FBI and the United States Attorney's Office in an investigation of the Cook County Court system. For almost 4 years he worked undercover posing as a corrupt prosecutor by accepting bribes from attorneys and later as an attorney in private practice making payoffs to judges and court personnel for the dismissal of cases. The investigation, known as “Greylord", resulted in bribery and tax charges being filed against 103 judges, lawyers and other court personnel and is one of the FBI's most successful undercover investigations. When the last Greylord trial concluded in 1997, Mr. Hake had testified at the trials of 23 defendants. After serving in federal law enforcement for 23 years, he retired from the United States Department of Justice Office of Inspector General and eventually returned to the practice of law as an Assistant State’s Attorney in Cook County. Mr. Hake retired in 2016. Mr. Hake has lectured extensively to attorneys, law enforcement officers, business professionals, and college and law students concerning the ethical lessons learned and investigative techniques used in Greylord. He has spoken at many colleges and law schools including the University of Chicago, Virginia Northwestern University, Harvard, Boston College, Yale, the University of Arizona, Georgetown University and Stockholm University. In 1980 Terrence Hake was a young prosecutor in Chicago, when he complained about the judge taking bribes to fix cases in the murder, rape, and child molestation preliminary hearing courtroom. His complaint found its way to the FBI's Chicago Field Office, and he was asked by the FBI to participate in Operation Greylord, an undercover investigation of the Cook County Courts. For three years and seven months, Mr. Hake posed, first as a corrupt prosecutor by accepting bribes from criminal defense attorneys, and later, as a corrupt defense attorney paying bribes for the dismissal of cases. In his role as a corrupt criminal defense attorney, Hake represented dozens of undercover FBI Special Agents from throughout the country, who came to Chicago to pose as criminal defendants in FBI-created criminal cases. Greylord was the first FBI investigation to bug a judge's chambers and another first was Hake becoming an FBI Special Agent in 1983, while working undercover. Operation Greylord is one of the FBI's most successful undercover investigations. Hake received the 1989 Louis E. Peters Award from the FBI and Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI for his undercover work as a prosecutor. Host: Peter Elmer |

Dr. Anez received her medical degree from the University of Zulia in Maracaibo, Venzuela, in 1998. She then did a residency in Gastroenterology at Santa Casa de Misericordia in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2004, and then worked for 11 years in a Bariatric surgery multidisciplinary team in Maracaibo Venezuela. In 2015, she came to the US and did a residency in Internal Medicine at the Chicago Medical School/Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. Since 2018, she has practiced as a Primary Care Physician at Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital. Jim Carris is a local business leader and decades-long resident of Lake County running for Congress to change the trajectory of the country – by working to end the negative social discourse that has taken hold in Washington and passing real policy solutions for Americans based on logic, compassion, and common sense. Jim is the child of an immigrant. His father left Greece because he was unable to attend college due to his parents’ political affiliation. Jim’s father moved to Chicago, where he met his mom at their local Greek church. He got his big break as a union house painter and later went on to be a contractor – all while providing for his family and raising five kids in Illinois with Jim’s mom – who herself was the daughter of immigrants. From his father’s experiences Jim gained three things: one, the love for this country because of what it has provided him – the ability to live the American dream. Two, the importance of small government oversight. And finally, the importance of education. College wasn’t just an option for Jim, he was expected to go. However, how to pay for it was a different story. The contracting business is sometimes difficult and so for periods of time during Jim’s life, money was tight. So, Jim put himself through college and law school by painting houses, working construction, washing dishes, and bartending – never afraid to put in the work. Jim has spent his life in business, not politics, practicing law, running his own company and as a corporate leader. His career in business, as well as watching his father run a small business, has provided Jim with the understanding of keeping a balanced budget and making payroll. Additionally, he understands the costs and hardships small businesses contend with, and the struggles 10th District families are dealing with, due to burdensome government overregulation, inflation and high taxes. Throughout the years, Jim has been deeply involved in his community serving on numerous community and charitable organizations, including the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, American Red Cross of Chicago, NAIOP, Lurie Children’s Hospital Pro-Am Golf Committee, the Plan Commission of Lake Forest as well as coaching youth soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, and flag football. This extensive involvement has given him firsthand knowledge of the issues that matter most to the people of the 10th Congressional District. In Congress, Jim will work across the aisle to deliver results for the families of the 10th Congressional District. He’s a new, independent leader who will make the economy, public safety and national security his main focus in Washington. OUR STORY In 2007, the McAveeney family opened their hearts & home to a precious baby in need of a temporary home. This experience exposed them to a world of vulnerable children couch-hopping, living in abandoned buildings, cars, garages, or living in under-funded foster care facilities and group homes. For 16 years, the McAveeneys' home has been a safe place for homeless children and teens across the Chicagoland area. OUR MISSION Fill a Heart 4 Kids provides homeless, at risk, and foster children food, critical necessities, life skills and educational support to empower and Build Brighter Futures 4 Kids! OUR GOAL Is for homeless youth and foster children to heal, feel valued and receive critical resources and opportunities from the community to achieve Brighter Futures 4 Kids! FACTS In Illinois, there are approximately 25,000 unaccompanied homeless youth and nearly 3,400 foster youth waiting to be adopted. State resources are woefully inadequate and do not provide enough basic necessities for homeless and foster youth. These precious children have experienced unimaginable pain and suffering. They struggle to focus in school because they are worried about finding a safe place to sleep at night, food, school supplies or clean clothes. They feel shame and sadness when they are bulled for wearing dirty clothes or when they hear classmates talk about birthday parties and holiday festivities. Some resort to trafficking themselves to obtain basic necessities. Many stop attending school. MODEL In partnership with teachers, social workers, principals and vetted social services organizations, we work to help the most vulnerable children. We provide critical supplies to restore dignity, reduce peer shaming and increase academic attendance. We welcome children into our beautiful newly-renovated facility where we provide life skills opportunities, educational programs and special celebrations to increase foster children's self-confidence and sense of belonging. We tutor at group homes, host special events and transform holidays into special experiences to help children feel loved and remembered. We rely on our vast volunteer network and purchase supplies by the pallet tax-free at reduced rates to maximize the efficiency of our operations, reduce our overhead and ensure our donors' dollars go further. WHAT WE DO FAH4K sponsors over 2,400 at-risk youth annually in various capacities. Each year, we host over 400 volunteer experiences for individuals, groups, corporations and team-building experiences to leverage resources and services to create the best outcome for children in desperate need. Hector Hernandez is a Master Painter and Resident Artist at The Atelier. Hector transports a Renaissance method of painting, 'Technique Mixte,' to our modern times. As the Resident Artist at The Atelier at 830 Green Bay in Lake Forest, Hector paints portraits, still lifes, and scenes while imparting expertise to local residents. Weekly classes at the Atelier offer a rare experience tailored to each student/apprentice. The Atelier and the slow-paced nature of classical techniques create the space and time to nurture discussions and a sense of community among artists. Hector, Nancy Smith, and The Atelier were recently featured in November's issue of Forest&Bluff magazine. Hector rose to prominence as an oil painter in Mexico. He studied at Chicago's American Academy of Art and the Atelier Neo Medici in the South of France. Mindy Lindholm is the Executive Director of COOL Ministries. She previously worked for COOL as the Transitional Housing Case Manager and has been a part of the COOL family for over eight years. She is a wife and a mother to five children. She was born and raised in Lake County and is a graduate of the College of Lake County and Northeastern Illinois University. She has degrees in Psychology and Social Work and feels blessed to continue serving the people of Lake County through COOL Ministries. COOL Ministries is a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization, was founded by people from six Lutheran Churches in the Waukegan/North Chicago area in 1982 and incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 1983. The First program was the COOL Food Pantry, opening its doors in January 1983. The pantry provides food for breakfast, lunch and dinner along with specialty foods for cardiac and diabetic diets. We offer ethnic foods and foods for those with allergies. Since the recession in this decade began visitation to the COOL Food Pantry has nearly doubled. In 2011 the Pantries served 39,709 individuals with food enough for 476,508 balanced meals. In 2015 visitation grew resulting in a total of 72,391 individuals receiving food from COOL. That is enough food to make 868,692 meals! Although the economy is improving COOL services are still in high demand. In 2016 more than 67,000 individuals received groceries from the COOL Pantries. Our pantry is supported by the entire Lake County community including churches, individuals, Waukegan Community Development Block Grant, corporate and foundation grants and many others. COOL programs are also supported by the United Way of Lake County. COOL began the Transitional Housing Program in October of 1988. The purpose of this Family Housing Program is to provide housing and case management to homeless families in need of life re-structuring. Along with case management , COOL provides a clean, safe place to live, counseling, life skills training and other support services which collectively work to enable guest families to transform their lives and make a smooth progression toward self-sufficient living. COOL provides rent and utility paid housing for up to 12 months while families work to save enough money for a home down payment or first and last months rent upon leaving the program. Guest families must be motivated to follow their individual goals plan in order to reach success in every category of their lives. Families must maintain a job, save money, receive counseling, attend money management classes, and acquire better domestic skills and parenting skills. Following the policies and guidelines is mandatory and enables families to achieve successful problem solving skills, such as attaining dependable transportation and adequate childcare, allowing them to progress more quickly and achieve goals more rapidly.
