ReNew Communities
Jul 27, 2022
David Weil, Ph.D., is the Board President & Executive Director of ReNew Communities. Renew Communities was launched in 2012 when Lake Forest-based Christ Church began to think more intentionally about how it might come alongside their neighbors within a 10-mile radius of the church. North Chicago is just 4.6 miles away. It has many wonderful qualities, but it also fights to overcome some challenges. Under David's leadership, a group started meeting together and speaking with North Chicago leaders, City staff, pastors, and residents to understand how best to partner with them. In the process, Dr. Weil and his wife Susan, along with two other families, relocated to North Chicago out of a desire to become part of the community and better understand the real needs. David will provide an update on ReNew Communities. David has a long history in management, teaching, and leading new initiatives in both corporate and church communities. David also serves in a volunteer capacity as a police and fire commissioner in North Chicago where he and his wife, Susan, live. Host: John Barth |

Northern Illinois Food Bank
Aug 24, 2022
Northern Illinois Food Bank’s mission is to provide nutritious food and resources for our neighbors, with dignity, equity and convenience through partnerships and innovation with a vision of everyone in Northern Illinois having the food they need to thrive. Since 1983, we have been committed to advocating for and with our neighbors by telling their stories and engaging a diverse community of supporters, who unite in giving their time, donating food and contributing funds to improve access to nutritious meals and increase food security throughout our 13-county service area. Through the collaboration among more than 900 food pantries and programs, dedicated staff, volunteers, and food and fund donors, we provide nutritious food to an average of 375,000 neighbors every month and have distributed 78 million meals in FY22. We continue to engage in this immense and crucial work with compassion, boldness and purpose, along with the understanding that we are all neighbors and when we are each involved, whether we are seeking assistance or offering help, together we will solve hunger. Randi Chambers is a former Middle School Teacher with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences from Northern Illinois University. Randi’s passion for working in the nonprofit world began in 2019 with her full-time volunteer service as an AmeriCorps VISTA with Northern Illinois Food Bank’s Agency Team. There, she helped to assess and assist with capacity building needs for some of the food pantries in the Food Bank’s Southern Region. She served a second VISTA year, joining the Food Bank's Philanthropy Team in April 2020, where she helped to secure funding, met with donors, and presented to groups who were interested in learning more about the Food Bank and how they can engage in the mission. This experience provided a solid foundation for the work that she has been doing since officially joining the Food Bank Team in January 2022 as a Development Officer of Corporate and Foundation Giving, with a focus on grant writing and donor relations. Lake Bluff Open Lands - A Brief Review
Aug 31, 2022
Formed in 1981, Lake Bluff Open Lands Association’s (“LBOLA”) mission is the protection, preservation, restoration and management of open spaces and natural areas, including wetlands, forests, ravines, beaches, bluffs, prairies, rivers and savannas in and around the Village of Lake Bluff for the benefit of local residents and visitors. LBOLA accomplishes this through the use of established land-management practices, sound conservation techniques and educational activities and the acquisition, maintenance and conservation of such natural areas. In addition, Lake Bluff Open Lands Association holds conservation easements on several parcels of open land in Lake Bluff and monitors compliance with the terms and conditions of the easements to ensure that the properties remain open, healthy and natural. The Lake Bluff Open Lands Association utilizes adult volunteers and paid interns (primarily in the summer) to preserve, protect and restore the open spaces and natural areas in and around Lake Bluff, IL. Workers use chain saws, brush saws and loppers to clear away invasive plants, use herbicides to control re-sprouts and use controlled burning techniques to revitalize the natural seed bed. They also plant new seedlings and grasses to assist in the revitalization of the natural seed bed. The largest portion of the Association’s expenses is for the wages, payroll taxes, workers compensation insurance and medical costs of these primarily high school and college age interns. Additional costs include restoration equipment and maintenance, purchase of herbicides, plants and seeds and the printing and postage costs of newsletter mailings to its donors/members. There is no paid full-time staff and the officers and directors do not receive any compensation for their efforts on behalf of the Association. Also attending with Sue will be, Al Trefts, Treasurer LBOLA and Michele Mrachek, Land Coordinator LBOLA Host: Joe Erkenswick |

Feed My Starving Children
Sep 07, 2022
Every year, millions of children die from preventable causes such as pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria and undernutrition. Hunger is still causing nearly half of deaths in children under 5 years old. From this data, we estimate at least 6,200 children die each day from causes related to undernutrition. This is heartbreaking. Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) believes hope starts with food. As a Christian nonprofit, FMSC is dedicated to seeing every child whole in body and spirit. FMSC works with food distribution partners that stay with communities for the long haul, empowering them to move from relief to development. FMSC meals are developed by food science and nutrition professionals to supplement nutritional needs and reduce problems with malnutrition. Nutrition allows children to grow, thrive and develop to their full potential. Host: Mark Dewart |

Waukegan 2 College
Sep 21, 2022
Aaron Arnold is the Executive Director and Liz Fales is the Director of Development & Community Engagement of Waukegan 2 College (W2C). W2C began in response to an urgent plea from the Waukegan community: “I don’t want my son to be stuck doing landscaping or my daughter working long, hard hours cleaning hotel rooms because they didn't go to college.” These Waukegan parents knew they had neither the experience nor expertise to guide their first-generation college bound children on the pathway to college graduation. The school system was equally inadequate to meet their needs. W2C formed in 2009 as a result of a series of listening sessions in Waukegan churches and other local institutions. The sessions — sponsored by Lake County United — highlighted a universal need and urgent priority to help their sons and daughters get to and through college graduation. From its 2009 launch with 25 students and one staff member, W2C has grown to 170 scholars, a full-time staff of seven, and 100+ volunteers who work as board members, tutors, and mentors. Lake Bluff Brewing Company
Nov 09, 2022
Mike Dorneker, Lake Bluff Brewing Company's brewer and owner, is a rare talent. He left his job as an IT administrator more than twelve years ago to attend the country's oldest commercial brewing school, Siebel Institute of Technology in Chicago, to pursue his dream of doing what he loves. We, here at LBBC, are confident that his beer is second to none. His recipes are top-notch, because everything is personally hand-crafted, and he uses only the best, freshest, local ingredients. Mike is a man of few words, but anyone who has ever had his beer knows that it is truly something special. He has made a deliberate choice to keep everything in-house and local to ensure the quality remains extremely high. He is equal parts artist and mad-scientist. Anytime he enters a competition, his beer tends to win, including multiple national awards at the U.S. Beer Open. Host: Drew Irvin |
