College Athletics: How to Get There and What to Expect

Dec 21, 2022

There are many mysteries surrounding college athletics. How good do your grades need to be to get looked at by college coaches? What should my stats look like to be recruited? What are the differences between divisions? From starting the recruiting process to getting there and trying to figure out how to balance sports, academics, other extracurriculars, and a social life, the whole process of college athletics is undeniably daunting. I will address these topics as well as touch on my experience and what I learned from playing a college sport.

My name is Audrey Kaus and I’m 22 years old. I graduated early from the University of Chicago in March of 2022 with a double major in Business-Economics and Spanish, while playing on the varsity women’s lacrosse team for four years and being captain for two. I went to LFHS and graduated in 2018, while there I played varsity basketball and varsity lacrosse for four years and was in leadership positions for both teams. I currently live in NYC and work for JP Morgan.

Larry Farmer

Role of a Lifetime

Jan 11, 2023

From LF-LB Patch on Oct 31, 2022.

Larry Farmer experienced great collegiate success as a member of the three-time NCAA national champion UCLA Bruins basketball team coached by the legendary John Wooden in the early 1970s. During Farmer’s years at UCLA, the Bruins had an 89-1 record. Next, he was drafted by the NBA Cleveland Cavaliers and the ABA (at the time) Denver Nuggets before concluding his professional playing career in Germany. There, he transitioned to the sidelines setting the stage for a nearly 40-year coaching career at both the NBA (Golden State Warriors assistant) and collegiate levels.

Farmer returned to his alma mater, UCLA, as its head basketball coach. He also served as head coach at Weber State and Loyola University/Chicago as well as an assistant coach at the University of Hawaii, North Carolina State and Western Michigan.

But when Farmer decided to retire to spend more time with family, his lifelong dream to coach high school basketball remained unfulfilled. That dream has now come true as Farmer assumes leadership of the Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart basketball program this season. And Interim Athletic Director Sierra Leigh says the all-girls college-prep high school in Lake Forest could not be more excited to have him there.

“Coach Farmer brings a philosophy that I have carried on through my years of coaching that I truly believe our student-athletes will strive and grow with,” Leigh said. “His personality shaped by his journey, willingness for opportunity, and understanding of the Sacred Heart have brought him into our organization with open arms. He exemplifies many qualities and will be a shining light for the entire Woodlands Academy community as we look forward to a very exciting 2022-23 basketball season.”

Farmer, who currently resides in Gurnee, says he is excited about this opportunity to coach at the high school level and can’t wait to start the season. “There is a level of enthusiasm and excitement surrounding Woodlands’ program that definitely got my attention,” he added.

Woodlands Academy is a member of the Independent School League, an Illinois High School Association affiliate comprising nine Chicago area private secondary schools.

In addition to his new coaching duties at Woodlands Academy, Farmer has kept busy during retirement writing a book titled “Role of A Lifetime,” due to be released Feb. 21, 2023.

Every night over 1700 people sleep in a safe, clean, decent and affordable home through the efforts of Habitat for Humanity Lake County.  Habitat in Lake County has also served 20+ families through our Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative program, which includes rehabilitation, weatherization, and A Brush with Kindness.

Habitat for Humanity Lake County is part of a global, nonprofit housing organization operated on Christian principles that seeks to put God’s love into action by building homes, communities and hope. Habitat Lake County is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and worldwide through constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes; by advocating for fair and just housing policies; and by providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions. Habitat for Humanity was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety, and that decent shelter in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all.

How the Habitat program operates in Lake County

Using Donations and volunteer labor, Habitat for Humanity Lake County partners with low-income, hard-working Habitat Partner Families to serve Habitat Partner Families Lake County.  Partner Families fall within certain income guidelines, complete 500 hours of sweat equity, attend 30+ financial education classes /budget counseling.  Partner Families then purchase a Habitat home with an interest-free, no-profit mortgage.

Rendezvous Arts: The Steam Quartet
Mar 24, 2023 7:00 PM - 8:45 PM

Join your fellow LFLB Rotarians for a fun night of Irish music and fine art! You can purchase tickets here: https://gortoncenter.org/event/rendezvous-arts-2022-2023-the-steam-quartet/

The Music: The Steam Quartet is a powerful combo of the leading exponents of traditional Irish music from the international acoustic scene. Chicago artists John Williams, Katie Grennan, Steve Morrow and Jeff Lindblade have thrilled audiences from Shanghai to Chicago and from Paris to Pittsburgh. Concertina, fiddle, bodhran and guitar ignite to raise the rafters and warm the heart. Appearances on BBC, PBS, Dreamworks, Riverdance and with the Chieftains round out their various backgrounds and their versatility embraces dance, wit, and road-tested musical integrity. Their energy, heartwarming stories, amazing friendship and unbelievable talent will melt your heart and make your toes tap with joy!

The Artist: Visual Artist, Benjamin Calvert carves his art into woodblocks and then prints the images onto paper. Intrigued? You will get to witness this in action at our events! Ben will be carving before and during the concert and then printing after the music is done so you can see his art form as it happens! How exciting is that?!?
These words from Ben:  “Pulling that first print off the block is pure joy. The excitement multiplies when there are multiple blocks for each color involved. Each successive color is a layer that informs the mystery and appeal of the final image. I take much pleasure in hearing interpretations of my work from others. I enjoy creating images that are at once familiar, yet open to interpretation.

Ralph Hansen, Jr.

Auto Racing

Mar 29, 2023

Ralph Hansen’s experience in racing dates back to 1967 when he first became friends with Anton “Tony” Hulman, the owner of The Indianapolis Motor Speedway.  Upon graduating from Indiana State University in 1970, Ralph went to work during the racing season at The Indianapolis Motor Speedway as an assistant to Tony Hulman.  From 1970 to 1978, Ralph got to know many race team owners and drivers. He became aware that they needed help in acquiring and managing corporate sponsors, as there were little or no professional sports marketing operations at the time.

In 1985 Ralph was introduced to the highly respected IndyCar team owner, Carl Haas, by his good friend Jack Safro. During the first year of Ralph’s involvement with Carl Haas and Paul Newman, he conceived of what is now the most successful sponsorship acquisition concept today.  Still referred to by many as the “Kmart concept,” it was the idea of a major retailer working with its vendors to support a significant sponsorship program. These programs had never been tried before their introduction by Ralph and Pegasus Marketing Group.

Many years later, and with over 400 hundred million dollars in sponsorship raised, the concept is still valid and in use today around the world.  Ralph has innovated other major creative programs for prominent companies like Eli Lilly and Company, McDonald’s Corporation, as well as many others.  Believing in and following “The Golden Rule” has been the standard that Ralph and his firm continue to live and do business by today.

Lake Forest Athletic Field Improvements

Apr 19, 2023

Jason will provide an update on City's improvments to the athletic fields at Deerpath Community Park.

At the Lake Forest City Council Meeting on Tuesday, February 21, the City Council formally approved construction of synthetic turf athletic fields and additional park amenities at Deerpath Community Park. City Council approved the base athletic field project for $12.9 million plus $3.1 million for additional amenities, including two restroom buildings with shaded open air pavilions, a playground, fitness stations, and natural area enhancements. Other park improvements include new tennis courts and the City’s first dedicated pickleball courts in the existing court footprint. This project is the culmination of a years-long planning effort that began with City Council approval of a Parks and Recreation Master Plan in 2019.

Honor Flight

May 10, 2023

Tom will tell us about his experience as a Guardian on a recent Honor Flight trip.

Honor Flight Network is a national nonprofit organization comprised of independent hubs working together to achieve the Honor Flight mission of celebrating America’s veterans by inviting them to share in a day of honor at our nation’s memorials.  Participation in an Honor Flight trip gives veterans the opportunity to share this momentous occasion with other comrades, remember the fallen, and share their stories and experiences with other veterans. Honored veterans always travel free of charge, thanks to generous donations to our organization.  Honor Flight Network currently honors those who served during World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and veterans of any service era who are critically ill.

Lake County Honor Flight celebrates America's veterans with a multi-day trip to Washington, D.C. to visit the memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifices.
