Elevating End of Life Experiences
Tiffany Johnson, Founder, We Too Shall Pass Elevating End of Life Experiences Jul 24, 2024

We Too Shall Pass addresses end of life needs and concerns with tenderness, grace and expertise because everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect when it comes to planning, treatment, care, and their last wishes. We encourage and support individuals in planning their own unique end of life journey--one that will offer peace of mind for the dying individual as well as their loved ones. We stay abreast of trends and share our knowledge of a broad range of options with regard to end of life care and end of life planning. We acknowledge the importance of legacy and how one wishes to be remembered, so we work closely with clients to articulate what that is and how to honor it. We understand the challenges faced during these times, and we are passionate about serving the needs of those who are facing them.

Tiffany Noelle Johnson, the Founder of We Too Shall Pass, began visiting nursing homes and sitting with elders when she was a child. At 12-years-old she helped care for her father after he experienced a stroke and for 7 years as he endured endless complications and medical trials. In September of 1996, she, alongside family, sat vigil as her father died peacefully at home. Being at home with family sharing in this natural part of life was obviously formative, and possibly prophetic.

Tiffany formally trained as an End-of-life Doula at Doorway Into Light in Maui and became a certified Death Doula in 2018. Prior to that, her studies in art therapy and clinical massage therapy had begun focusing her interest in the power of journeying alongside individuals going through transition. In 2023, after working in memory care and witnessing the pain and confusion family members often experience when loved ones develop cognitive decline, Tiffany completed certification to specialize as a Dementia Death Doula.

Tiffany offers holistic support and guidance to those navigating the inevitable challenges that occur during loss. She creates sacred space and ceremony tailored to each unique situation. She incorporates bodywork, nutrition, music, art, and nature into her practice, and she is able to work closely with home healthcare, medical staff, and hospice teams. Her gentle, grounded nature allows individuals to come to their own unique way to process and heal around their circumstances. She is also sensitive, and highly adaptable, to the changing environments and needs that often arise during these difficult times. On several occasions, Tiffany has even been invited to guide pets and support their human families through the end-of-life transition–likely the result of her general love for animals and her deep empathy for the special bond humans have with their pets.

Education about options and holistic approaches to the end-of-life journey are driving forces for Tiffany. She is also always seeking to grow her awareness and tools to offer those she serves.

Gorton Center - Celebrating 50 Years
Ann Kiesling & Megan Engelberg Gorton Center - Celebrating 50 Years Sep 04, 2024

Ann Kiesling is Manager of Donor Relations for Gorton Center and Megan Engelberg is the Venue Rental Coordinator/Community Programming Liaison.  They provided the following highlights of their presentation:

As summer comes to a close, we are busy preparing for our biggest season yet at Gorton-the last quarter of our 50th Anniversary Year!  This fall/winter the community can find a wealth of classes, workshops, films, fests, wine tastings, performing arts shows and theater programs -all programmed with this special occasion in mind-aimed to elevate the patron experience.

Our season kicks off on September 14th with a spectacular Birthday Bash, featuring a jam-packed day of festivities. Highlights include Dog Day, fun-filled games and activities like a dunk tank and mini golf, and live music by Hollywood musician and American Pie actor Thom Nicholas. The evening will crescendo with a special performance by the legendary '90s band Fastball in our John & Nancy Hughes Theater!

This fall boasts robust programming with our first ever Cirque show in September-fun for the entire family, and Bruce in the USA in October-for Springsteen fans, or anyone who enjoys nostalgia. Speaking of October, you won't want to miss our first ever Oktoberfest, where you and your friends can gather under a tent to enjoy a night of lively music, authentic German fare and traditional German beer in true Bavarian style!

Gorton always has something going on, whether it be films (old and new alike, documentaries and festivals such as Mountainfilm), classes (mahjong, health/wellness, yoga, salsa dancing, finance, and the list goes on) and even our very own Children, youth and adult theater/acting programs.

Reading Power: Fostering the Promise of Literacy
Beth Zender and Olivia Shinners Reading Power: Fostering the Promise of Literacy Sep 18, 2024

Beth Zender, Community Engagement & Volunteer Manager, has been with Reading Power for 5 years; she joined Reading Power in 2019 as a volunteer tutor and then joined staff in 2022 after the pandemic, when Reading Power decided to actively work to reach more students at risk of literacy failure. Teaching reading has always been a passion of hers. Prior to staying home to raise her two boys, she was a Communication Arts Teacher at Adlai E. Stevenson High School. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences and a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Illinois. High-quality education for all students has always been a passion of hers, and Reading Power is providing that to students in under-resourced schools.

Olivia Shinners recently joined Reading Power as a Volunteer Coordinator. She will be helping recruit more volunteer tutors, so that Reading Power can continue to reach more students. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Diplomacy & World Affairs from Occidental College and brings her experience from working on research and data management for international organizations. Olivia currently teaches fitness and yoga classes at Life Time Lake Zurich, where she's proud to build community around the goal of people living happier, healthier lives. She chose to join Reading Power because she's passionate about making progress toward equity for young students in her local community

Rotary International's Basic Education and Literacy Month is celebrated in September. Rotary clubs and districts are encourged to work on a variety of projects to promote literacy and basic education.  In recognition of Literacy Month, the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Rotary Club has invited Reading Power to provide an update on its programs.  Several members of our Club are Reading Power tutors.

Joining us from Reading Power will be Beth Zender, Community Engagement and Volunteer Manager and Olivia, Reading Power's newly appointed Recruitment Coordinator.

Reading Power provides individualized, high-dosage, one-to-one tutoring in person during the school day for children in preschool through second grade. We do this by partnering with schools needing supplemental literacy support, where needs exceed resources.

Reading Power’s highly trained volunteer tutors provide one-to-one literacy instruction during the school day under the guidance of educational professionals. Lesson plans structure each tutoring session and are individualized daily for each student. Each kindergarten through second grade session encompasses reading, writing, and speaking to foster the promise of literacy. The target population for the kindergarten through second grade programs is students scoring below the 25th percentile on universal assessments, thus reading below grade level. This past school year many students started below the 10th percentile.

American Higher Education and the Public Good
Dr. Dawn Abt-Perkins, Prof, Lake Forest College American Higher Education and the Public Good Nov 13, 2024

Traditionally, American Higher Education has enjoyed the relative luxury of being immune to the consequences of public opinion.  In the past, the American public believed in the basic worth of a college degree, in the research contributions of college intellectuals, and the value of a traditional college experience to prepare its young people for our economy, to contribute to our communities, and to act responsibly in a civil/democratic society.  Recent data and evidence show that public confidence in higher education is changing.  According to recent polls such as one done by New America, less than half of Americans believe that colleges are having a positive effect on the country.  In this talk, I will discuss the impact that this change in public opinion is having on higher education and present possible solutions for consideration.

Lake Forest College offers an MLS (Master of Liberal Studies) degree, which includes eight interdisciplinary courses at the graduate level. Dr. Abt-Perkins will be teaching the spring 2025 evening seminar MLS572, "Higher Education in the U.S.:  Goals and Outcomes, Current Challenges, and Sustainability". For more information, see: https://www.lakeforest.edu/academics/majors-and-minors/master-of-liberal-studies

In her roles at Lake Forest College,  Special Assistant to the Dean of Faculty for Student Success and Associate Dean of the Faculty for Student Success, Professor of Education Dr. Dawn Abt-Perkins has been in the center of current issues challenging higher education—investments in changes in technology, belief systems about the value proposition of higher education, and the growing public concern about the increasing costs of the higher education experience. Dawn's recent book project,  Professors Matter, is about the role that professors play in these important conversations about higher education reform.
